Does Li-Ion or LiPo batteries have higher C rate?

Editorial:Joe Issue Date:2019-12-27 Views:2092

The high-rate battery is divided into a discharge rate and a charge rate, and "C" is used to indicate the ratio of the charge and discharge current of the battery, that is the rate.

For example, a 1200 mAh battery, 0.2 C means 240 mA (0.2 mA of the 1200 mAh battery), and 1 C means 1200 mA (1 times rate of the 1200 mAh battery). Normally high discharge rate batteries can be fast-charged. However, since lithium ions are embedded in the negative electrode graphite during charging, the process of inserting lithium ions into the positive electrode during the discharge process is difficult, so the fast charge ratio is generally lower than the discharge rate.

In order to use in model aircraft, RC, power tools, racing car or UAV (Unmanned aerial vehicle), high C-rate battery and lithium battery are usually required because the chemical composition of lithium makes it easier to achieve high-rate and more stable charging and discharge.

Most consumer applications require only 1C of battery, you should choose high rate battery that if you need higher discharge rates and faster charging times. With the development of various industries, higher discharge and faster-charging requirements for batteries have pushed the technical improvement and application of rate batteries.

Fast charge battery refers to a battery that can be filled with 80% or 100% in a short time. By changing the electrolyte formulation of the battery to withstand high current and fully charge in a short time, fast charging is a technology to manage power transmission, which makes current to reach a higher level, which is the biggest feature of fast charge battery.

For this fast-charge battery, it can be achieve charging as high as 5C charging, which means the battery fully charged is around 12 minutes.

At the same time, a charger capable of outputting the same current can be achieved. If you need a higher rate of charging, of course, it can be achieved, but fast charging also has a certain degree of wear and tear on the battery. If you want to maintain a longer battery life, choose 3C to 5C fast charging may be better.
