This month, Xiaomi introduced its latest achievement in the field of next generation fast charging – the pioneering 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology. A major leap forward from Xiaomi’s 30W Wireless Charging Technology introduced last year, the new iteration of the cutting edge technology is an order of magnitude ahead of similar solutions offered by other smartphone brands.
This technology is capable of filling a 4,000 mAh battery to 10% in 1 minute, 50% in 8 minutes and 100% in just 19 minutes.
For comparison, 30W Mi Wireless Charging Technology from 2019 was capable of charging a similar battery to 50% in about 25 minutes, and 100% in 69 minutes.
As can be seen from the demonstration video, the peak power of the test machine during the actual charging process has already exceeded 80W. The prototype used in the current test is modified from the Xiaomi 10 Pro and the existing Xiaomi 55W air-cooled vertical wireless charging dock. Among them, the input end of the charging stand uses the 120W charger of the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition, and the input voltage reaches 20V. If it is replaced with a 100W USB-PD charger, it can also achieve 80W power. In addition, the input power is automatically adjusted according to the instant temperature of the device.
The charging time of the nominal smart-phone battery is about 1 to 2 hours, its a large break though of wireless charging technology.
It is possible that Xiaomi uses a specially formulated fast charge battery, which allows the battery to be charged with a larger charging current, or it may be other methods to achieve the battery been fully charged in a short period of time.
In the past time, the wire charging is more advantageous than wireless. we are more likely to used wire charging due to the power (wattage) issue. However, the power of wireless charging will get closer to wire charging, it must be replaced in the future.
