How to Customize a Lipo Battery?

Editorial:Phina Issue Date:2022-04-06 Views:2841

Custom Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries have been the demand of more and more product vendors, but general product companies lack battery engineers, battery design, and other capabilities. Therefore, a professional Li-ion battery factory comes to help customize. Such factories are mainly located in China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and the United States. However, it is difficult for small factories to provide customization services, for they have limited R&D and production capacity with higher requirements for customization of small sample quantities. Typically, a more comprehensive battery customization service is provided by a company size of about 1000 people or more. This article will tell you how to choose a reliable custom battery manufacturer for your custom-battery needs in a professional way.

What is a custom battery?

Battery customization, the work of technology content, is based on the specific needs of customers to assess a new battery model. Compared to the traditional standardized cylindrical battery, such as 18650, 21700, etc., it needs to take the following into account: the battery factory production process, control of materials, and whether they have a wealth of experience in the program. Generally, when customizing a battery we will base it on the five major requirements provided by the user.

Custom by shape

The size and shape of the battery can be customized. In addition to the different dimensions of length, width, and height, it can be made into various shapes such as round, trapezoid, triangle, etc.

Custom by capacity

Calculate whether the capacity of the battery can meet the user's demand for endurance time according to the power consumption of the product.

Custom by C-Rate

Some special products will have certain requirements for the C-Rate (multiplier), such as electronic cigarettes (vapes), drones, car emergency starter power (jump starter), and electric supercars. High current charging and discharging performance is the primary consideration of the battery to meet the demand for fast charging or high burst power.

Temperature-based customization

The best working temperature of a lithium battery is about 25℃, and the general working temperature range is -20℃ to 50℃, but if in the special high and low-temperature environment, the capacity of lithium battery will decay sharply, affecting the life, or even can not be used normally, so special customized high-temperature lithium battery or low-temperature lithium battery is needed. Like Grepow has rich experience in the field of low-temperature batteries, there are many mature low-temperature lithium battery programs, the lowest can reach -55 ℃, to meet the needs of special industries with electricity.

Voltage-based customization

General lithium battery full charge voltage is 4.2V, to improve energy density and higher endurance, more and more product designers will use high-voltage lithium batteries (LiHV), like Apple's latest series of cell phones, is the use of 4.35V high-voltage lithium polymer batteries to increase the endurance. However, this depends on the appliances and PCB scheme, whether the use of high-voltage lithium batteries, which will require the cooperation of product designers and battery engineers.

How to customize the battery?

Existing product design

You already have a product design, space, size, and size fixed, need to customize a battery.

Points to focus on:

Factory technology: how much energy density; Mold opening fee (cost); Whether you can provide a matching board.

No product design

You do not yet have a product design, but need to customize a battery, involving program experience. It is recommended to find a professional custom battery manufacturer, and the company needs to have a strong R & D team supporting and can provide reference cases.

Points to focus on:

Whether the battery factory can provide evaluation services Can they meet their own needs? such as: a. 3 hours of battery life b. The weight of the battery should not exceed 1kg c. Battery shape should be rectangular d. Maximum product size

Other areas need attention while battery customized

Multiplier(C-Rate), voltage, capacity, internal resistance, temperature, number of cycles (battery life), qualification and certification of the battery factory, product transportation, and price.

Summary

The performance of the battery needs to be measured and judged from many aspects: multiplier, voltage, internal resistance, etc. The battery is placed in the application products and works by being combined with the protection plate (BMS/PCM), whose performance is the product experience to reflect the sense. At this time when customizing a battery, all aspects of the battery data from the needs of the product users should be considered, so we need to pay attention to not only the custom battery to provide custom factory qualifications and the basic parameters of the battery but a certain understanding of product applications and service targets.
